Massachesetts
Massachusetts is among the northeastern seaboard states with limited real estate and a less than optimal climate for agriculture. However, the state still sets aside 12,000 acres for cranberries, 14,000 acres for corn, 46,000 acres for permanent pasture and rangeland, and accommodates 38,000 cows. Amazingly, there are 7,200 active farms spanning across 500,000 acres.
Family-owned, local farms are the unsung heros here, making up nearly 80% of the farms in the state. Supporting these farms will help to immunize them against inflated markets and thin margins, solidifying their future and keeping the local economy, the communities, and the people, strong!
