Montana
Montana is the pinnacle of the western frontier. This state has a staggering 38.5 million acres of permanent pasture and rangeland and accommodates around 2.2 million cattle every year, ranking it the 13th largest cattle producer in the nation in 2022. When it comes to free range animals grazing as nature intended, Montana has the real estate for just that.
There are 27,100 farms in the state, operating on 57.9 million acres. Montana is one of the few states that has allocated the majority of it's agricultural acreage to pasture. In this case, mono-crops make up the minority, allocating only 13.9 million acres to crops such as wheat, barley, lentils, peas, chickpeas, corn, canola, flax seed, safflower, oats, sugar-beets, and legumes.
Family owned farms make up 97% of Montana's agricultural landscape and the state has only seen a decrease of about 2,424 farms since 2007. Let's support Montana's successes by supporting locally owned-family farms, a move that will solidify these successes for the future.
