Nebraska
Nebraska is an agricultural powerhouse. Currently, there are 44,800 active farms operating on 44.8 million acres. 21.5 million acres have been allocated to permanent pasture and rangeland, providing an ample amount of space to accommodate the 6.8 million cattle the state produces, landing Nebraska in the #2 spot for the largest cattle producer in the country in 2022.
Farmland in Nebraska is split nearly down the middle, with 21.6 million acres being dedicated cropland for growing corn, soybeans, hay & haylage, wheat, sorghum, potatoes, millet, sunflower, peas, and sugar-beets.
The number of farms and ranches in Nebraska saw a sharp decline in 2021, decreasing by 700 farms and 100,000 acres farms from 2020. The number of farms with agricultural sales of $100,000 or more decreased 300 farms from the previous year as well.
It is clear that Nebraska's agricultural landscape is thriving as a whole, however, it is also clear that the pressure of inflated markets and stiff competition is being felt at the lower level. We can help support the smaller, family-owned responsible farms by sourcing directly from farm to table.
