South Dakota
With 29,400 active farms and over 43.2 million agricultural acres, South Dakota has seen very little decline of farmland in recent years. The state boasts around 22 million acres of permanent pasture and rangeland and produces upwards of 3.8 million cattle annually, landing the state in the #8 spot of highest cattle produces in the country in 2022. While beef is the #1 producer in the state, South Dakota also generates around 3.6 billion pounds of milk each year. Additionally, the state produces around 2 million hogs, 235,000 sheep, and 4 million turkeys each year. The vast pasture ensures that more livestock have the ability to graze and roam naturally, allowing the state to produce high quality beef from healthy cows.
With the abundance of healthy livestock in the state, sourcing directly from local sustainable, regenerative farms is a fantastic option that cuts out the middle men and not only allows for super-fresh farm to table nutrition, but it helps to increase the farm's profit margins and keep revenue in the local economies where it belongs.
