Utah
There has been an increase of about 1,500 farms since 2017, a sign that the farming and agriculture is alive and well in the state of Utah. Permanent pasture and rangeland makes up around 8.8 million acres of the 10.7 million acres of farmland and there are currently around 17,900 farms in operation. Utah's primary livestock production comes in the form of cattle, sheep, and hogs. In 2021 the state produced around 790,000 cattle, 270,000 sheep, and 940,000 hogs. Since free-range pasture is in abundance, there are as little as 21,000 cattle on feed.
Utah is a prime producer of high quality ruminant nutrition as well, focusing primarily on hay, haylage, and alfalfa, producing around 4.4 million tons a year and generating the state an additional $977.8 million of agricultural revenue.
With the recent growth, Utah's agricultural scene looks promising. By increasing the demand for food sourced directly from responsible, sustainable farms, we will help to maintain this growth and encourage other farms to move away from factory farming and over to more regenerative farming practices.
